South West England
NMR works closely with farmers and milk buyers in South West England. Our service delivery team, headed up by Regional Services Manager Jenny Bonning and Regional Business Manager Nicci Chamberlin are responsible for the day to day relationship with dairy farmers, overseeing work carried out by the self-employed milk recorders, helping with software queries and checking for any changes or developments in the dairy farmer's goal for his herd - be it health, production or efficiency.

Our services
We are proud and not a little humbled that our farmers are happy to endorse the products and services we provide them. Please take a look at a few below:
Farmer to Farmer - Genomics testing
Steve Crimp farms with his parents near Kingsbridge in Devon and was interviewed in 2023 about genomic testing his herd with NMR.
The Crimps use NMR’s GeneEze genomic testing service and test heifers at six months old, before turnout, and in plenty of time to get the results and make breeding choices before first service.
“We look at our genomic test results on the AHDB Herd Genetic report and rank heifers on the autumn-calving index,” says Steve. “This index weights the ranking in line with our breeding goals, particularly fertility, but also lifespan and milk solids, without compromising yield.”
Each year the Crimps look to breed between 50 and 60 heifers from the top 40% of eligible animals including bulling heifers. “We’ll use sexed semen on our best 90 to 100 animals, which comprises our top-ranked cows and best heifers. We rear a few extra heifers to make sure we’ve enough replacements in case of TB losses.
Genomic testing offers 60% accuracy, compared with 30% from parent averages. We have a far more accurate and reliable data set to work with for each heifer. The rate of improvement is faster, and also the range within each group is getting tighter,” adds Chris, who believes the performance of heifers reflects the improved accuracy of data they now use to make breeding decisions.

Farmer to Farmer - Milk recording data

Paul George farms at Tressilian near Truro, Cornwall.
Paul George's herd of 320 cows and 120 followers have regularly place in the top 15 herds for combined fat and protein over the last five years.
“It all starts with the basic recording,” he says. “We record once a month,” he says and if all we were to glean from our NMR records is an analysis of each cow’s milk components, her somatic cell count and the herd’s routine Johne’s HerdWise report, then we’d be happy,” says Paul.
Improved production and milk solids haven’t come at the expense of a high health status and good fertility, which are carefully managed on an individual-cow basis, via NMR. The information is imported from NMR’s Herd Companion onto the Uniform Agri dairy management system and used by the unit’s staff and advisers.
“We’ll keep improving with what we have now, using robust data to run a sustainable herd. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the marketplace and I don’t think we could have predicted the events of the first few months of 2026. But if we’re recording and controlling as much as we can on the farm, it will help us weather the storms.”
