Dairy herd survey shows proportion of healthy cows in herds is on the increase

The latest key performance indicator (KPI) report of a cross-section of 500 NMR recorded herds shows a significant reduction in the proportion of herds keeping high numbers of cows with chronic somatic cell counts (SCC). Published by the University of Reading, the annual report is now in its seventh year.

Scottish herd returns to top spot

Messrs Harvey from Beeswing in Dumfries have returned to top spot in NMR’s Annual Production Report for the year ending September 2016. Published this month (January) the report lists NMR’s top 1% of herds ranked on weight of fat and protein. Moving up from third place in the previous year, the herd now has an average of 946kg of fat and protein and a milk yield of 13,079kg on three-times-a-day milking based on 325 qualifying cow lactations.

Mobile ‘app’ speeds up cattle tag ordering

Nordic Star, part of the NMR Group, has developed and launched a specialised mobile app for smart phones and tablets this autumn. Downloaded free of charge from the Apple and Google Play stores, it allows livestock producers to order new or replacement tags whilst ‘on the go’.
