SireConnect on show at AgriScot

Published November 7th 2016

NMR will demonstrate its new independent dairy bull selection program, SireConnect, at AgriScot on November 16, 2016 (Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh).  Built in Germany and developed by NMR to meet the needs of the UK market, SireConnect is a web-based service that benefits from direct access to the herd’s NMR data and any available genomic data.

“SireConnect uses the pedigree history for each animal to minimise the risk of any inbreeding,” says NMR’s genetic services manager Laurence Loxam. “And it also allows selection parameters and preferences to be set.”

The new program uses the comprehensive predicted transmitting ability data (PTAs) for all animals in the herd. “This data, along with flexible on-farm data input, minimises the time-consuming chore of scoring all individual animals, without compromising its accuracy,” adds Mr Loxam.

SireConnect links with more than 45,000 sires and uses the milk recorded history on all the cows. It then can select from around 1,500 bulls marketed throughout the UK for the Holstein breed.

Bulls from NMR’s portfolio will be included in the bull selections, but will not be selected in preference to other more suitable sires for matings.

“This service will be independent and on offer to all NMR customers and not just those using Our easy access to herd information, coupled with the advantages of this data-based service, means that the costs can be nominal and will be related to herd size.”

SireConnect will be demonstrated on the NMR stand, number 134, at AgriScot 2016.
