In second place is DJ and KL Leadbetters’ 56-cow herd from Derbyshire. They move up from sixth place in the previous year, having added 37kg of fat and protein to their average which is now 911kg, with 12,656kg of milk on twice a day milking.

In the Shorthorn listings, JS Knowles from Yorkshire retains top place. Top Ayrshire herd is the Tinklers’ Park Head herd, also based in Yorkshire.

P L Boam’s herd from Derbyshire moves into top place in the Jersey rankings and the Griffins’ herd from the Isle of Wight is the top production Guernsey herd.

Nerewater Farm’s herd, which is based in Cumbria, retains its first placed British Friesian herd in the breed rankings.

The national tables rank the top 1% of NMR-recorded herds by breed, based on fat and protein production and on genetic merit for the year ending September 2016. Herds are also ranked, within breeds, by county. A full list is available on the NMR website:
