HerdWise winner hosts Spring farm walk

Published March 1st 2017

The 2016 winners of the NMR Herdwise best practice competition, Tom and Karen Halton, will host a walk at their Chance Hall Farm, Congleton, Cheshire, on Tuesday 28 March 2017.

The competition is run annually by NMR to identify and highlight herds demonstrating high standards of Johne’s disease control.

Runners-up in 2015, the Haltons made some changes in their Johne’s control practices to move up to top place with their 500-cow cross-bred herd. “Strong, clear protocols backed up with an enthusiastic and inclusive team approach to Johne’s control – and to the whole herd management – has put this herd in top place,” says Gwent-based dairy producer and chairman of the National Johne’s Action Group Lyndon Edwards who, with NMR vet Karen Bond, judged the competition.
The competition is open to all farmers using NMR’s HerdWise service. This is a CheCS approved screening scheme for Johne’s where the whole herd is tested on a quarterly basis using milk recording samples. Results and reports are used by producers and their vets to implement and monitor an appropriate control programme.
The Halton’s farm walk starts at 10.45am and lunch is provided from 12.30pm. Producers interested in attending the walk should register by telephone on
