A programme, developed by Kite Consulting and Solway Vets, and in conjunction with NMR, to help dairy farmers monitor and reduce antibiotic usage, has won the Animal Health, Agriculture and Food Supply Award at the 2019 Antibiotic Guardian Awards.

Will Hawking and herd manager James Smith, winners of the 2018 HerdWise Best practice competition, will host a farm walk on Wednesday April 24, 2019, at Oldfield Farm near Chippenham.
James and his team at Oldfield Farm - including vet their Ian Cardiff received the award for their impressive work in implementing Johne’s control measures and making good progress in reducing any risk of the disease in the 240-cow Holstein Friesian organic herd.
The effects of Johne’s, BVD and Neospora on cow performance will be the theme of talks given at the farm walk in April by NMR vet Karen Bond and Ian Cardiff and Gethin Roberts from the Malmesbury-based George Vet Group.

Dairy herd survey shows proportion of healthy cows in herds is on the increase

The latest key performance indicator (KPI) report of a cross-section of 500 NMR recorded herds shows a significant reduction in the proportion of herds keeping high numbers of cows with chronic somatic cell counts (SCC). Published by the University of Reading, the annual report is now in its seventh year.

New Energy Balance service introduced

Nutritionists and vets are being encouraged to take advantage of NMR’s new Energy Balance service, ahead of the winter feeding period.

Developed by NMR and SRUC, and funded by Innovate UK, the service uses individual cow milk samples, which are collected for milk recording purposes, to provide an energy balance result for each cow throughout her lactation.
