500 Herd Study - August 2018

This is the ninth annual study describing key indicators of production, fertility and health in commercial black and white dairy herds in the United Kingdom. The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are based on milk recording data from 500 commercial black and white herds for the 12 month period ending on 31st August 2018. Herd selection used random numbers to ensure a representative cross-section of all herds (good, bad and indifferent) that milk record with National Milk Records (NMR).

‘BEST PRACTICE’ FARM WALK
11 March 2019
Will Hawking and herd manager James Smith, winners of the 2018 HerdWise Best practice competition, will host a farm walk on Wednesday April 24, 2019, at Oldfield Farm near Chippenham.
James and his team at Oldfield Farm - including vet their Ian Cardiff received the award for their impressive work in implementing Johne’s control measures and making good progress in reducing any risk of the disease in the 240-cow Holstein Friesian organic herd.
The effects of Johne’s, BVD and Neospora on cow performance will be the theme of talks given at the farm walk in April by NMR vet Karen Bond and Ian Cardiff and Gethin Roberts from the Malmesbury-based George Vet Group.
