One Day Conference Proceedings - Saturated Fat in the Dairy Supply Chain
NML, the University of Reading and Dairy UK organised a one-day conference (September 30) on Saturated Fat in the Supply Chain.
The special one day conference brought together leading researchers, scientists and representatives from the retail sector to discuss the challenge facing the dairy industry and how best the industry might look to ensure that it responds positively.
Speakers included the University of Reading's Professor Ian Givens, Professor Julie Lovegrove, Professor Chris Reynolds and Dr Kirsty Kliem, Dr Claire Hughes from Marks and Spencer, Ben Bartlett from NML, James Husband from Evidence Based Veterinary Consultancy and geneticist Dr Mike Coffey from SAC. Researchers from French animal feed compounder Valorex also presented their experience of producing milk with a lower saturated profile and marketing dairy products as part of the Bleu Blanc Coeur model.
"The conference addresses many of the questions that are being asked about saturated fat in human health and the implications on cow health and the environment from changing the profile of fatty acid production," says NML director Ben Bartlett who initiated the meeting and who, through NML, has carried out fatty acid profiles on milk samples using infra red technology in order to build up a database of trends in fatty acid profiles among our dairy herds.
