NML hold BVD Control Seminar

In response to the Scottish Government's plans to eradicate Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) from all Scottish cattle herds by December 2012, National Milk Laboratories is holding a BVD seminar. This one day event will take place on Monday October 10, 2011 at Shawlands Park Hotel, Larkhall, South Lanarkshire.

Targeted at vets, advisers and meat and milk buyers, the programme will focus on the latest advice and practical control measures for BVD for both beef and dairy producers. Included in the line up of speakers are Nigel Miller, NFUS President and Gordon Struth from the Scottish Government who will summarise the eradication programme.

Christoph Goetz, European Sales Manager for IDEXX Livestock and Poultry Diagnostics, will discuss successful BVD eradication programmes. Dr Goetz and his team have been instrumental in the development of the highly successful Swiss BVD eradication programme which began in 2008 and more recently the German BVD eradication which began 1st January 2010. This will be followed by SAC vet George Caldow who will explain the benefits of BVD control and an analysis of the economics of the disease.

"BVD is known to be associated with major production losses due to infertility, poor growth rates and severe mucosal disease," says NML Healthcheck manager Steve West.
"With the support of the Scottish Government, we anticipate that the key issues around BVD control will be discussed at the seminar. The incentives for producers, in terms of production and financial pay-back, will be high on the agenda and we will look at the best control measures available to aid us with the eradication scheme."
